Manny Smith

President

Manuel “Manny” McDonnell Smith is President of the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, an organization focused on ensuring diversity in both coverage and staffing in the newsrooms of the Delaware Valley. In January, he launched a new focus on increasing entrepreneurship opportunities for Black Journalists & Media Creators with the launch of a two-year residency at Pipeline Philly – the city’s premier co-working space located directly across from City Hall.

 

Smith is a News Assignment Editor with NBC 10/Telemundo 62 and is a veteran of CNBC, DailyMail.com, and the FOX News Network Desk.

Ernest Owens

Vice President-Print

Ernest Owens, Vice President-Print of PABJ and leads several initiatives on behalf of the chapter including outreach to the emerging and millennial journalist communities. In 2019, Ernest was instrumental in securing a private grant for the Association to launch a first-of-its kind residency at Pipeline Philly, the city’s premier co-working space and community. He is a renowned journalist, receiving several honors including NABJ’s Emerging Journalist Award and PABJ’s Trailblazer Award.

 

Owens is Writer at Large for Philadelphia Magazine and CEO of Ernest Media Empire, LLC. He covers a variety of social issues regarding race, LGBTQ, and pop culture.

Vincent Thompson

Vice President-Broadcast

Vincent Thompson is Vice President-Broadcast of PABJ who leads the Association’s efforts to secure the Greater Philadelphia Region’s important newsmakers at meetings and events. In 2019, Thompson was responsible for ensuring all three candidates in the city’s Democratic Mayoral Primary Election were among the first to address members in on-the-record sessions. He is also the interim PABJ membership coordinator. In 2018, he received PABJ’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017, he was named Politics and Government Reporter of the Year by the Pen & Pencil Club of Philadelphia, the nation’s oldest press club in daily operation.

 


Thompson is currently News Editor at WURD AM/FM Radio in Philadelphia and is Principal of Thompson Mediaman Communications.

Sharyn Flanagan

Parliamentarian

Sharyn Flanagan. Parliamentarian of PABJ, responsible for ensuring proper procedure and assembly for the founding chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. In 2019, Flanagan advocated for the launch of an Arts & Entertainment Task Force, a dual-role committee which coordinates internal activities and training of members on that beat, while serving as an outreach arm of PABJ to work for expanded attention and coverage of the Delaware Valley’s Black Arts Communities.

 

Flanagan is Magazine Editor at The Philadelphia Tribune is a veteran of the Associated Press, USA Today, Bucks County Courier Times and the Tallahassee Democrat.

Tauhid Chappell

Secretary

Tauhid Chappell is Secretary of PABJ’s Executive Board and is the Chair/Executive Producer of the Association’s “Color of Cannabis” Educational Outreach Initiative. In 2019, Chappell was instrumental in updating the organizations social and digital presence, including launching an online membership management portal, moving official board communications to a digital collaboration service, and developing a newsletter publishing platform. These efforts have transformed how the 45-year old organization engages with and serves its membership base.

 

Chappell is currently an Engagement Editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer. He is a veteran of The Washington Post, KPNX-TV &  KXTV-TV.

Camari Ellis

Treasurer

Camari Ellis is Treasurer of PABJ and is chiefly responsible for the Associations’ financial procedures and reporting. As a professional investment and Tax Advisor with over 20 years’ experience, he is also co-chair of the PABJ’s Journalism Entrepreneurship Task Force which provides advice, training, and support for the organizations’ content creator/owner community.

 

Ellis is also the host/owner of “The Finance Rebel”, a multimedia platform where he advocates for Black Wealth.

Melony Roy

Immediate Past President

Melony Roy is the Immediate Past President of PABJ and was most recently Director of Social Media for KYW Newsradio 1060, supervising the station’s Twitter, Facebook, and other interactive media branding efforts. She also was the founding executive producer of HearPhilly.com, an online radio station heard around the world that is dedicated to fun in the city.

Charlene Horne

Board Member At-Large

Charlene Horne is a PABJ executive board member-at-large who has been the longtime leader of the Scholarship Committee which encompasses all young adult engagement on behalf of PABJ. Under her leadership, the organization has successfully increased the number of scholarships we grant each year. She is also the board champion our efforts to engage mid & late career journalists in digital and entrepreneurship opportunities.

 

In her full-time role, Charlene is the video editing supervisor at CBS 3 Eyewitness News

Chantale Belefanti

Board Member At-Large

Chantale Belefanti is a Board Member At-Large for PABJ responsible for leading the organizations’ media outreach efforts. She is also Chair of the Association’s Media Access Workshop and Co-Chair of the Associate Member Task Force.

 

Belefanti is a recent Master’s Graduate of Drexel University and was the host of the 2018 season of Reporter’s Roundtable on WLVT-TV/PBS -39.
