The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering three (3) $1,000 scholarships to Philadelphia area college students pursuing a career in journalism / multimedia arts. Those eligible for this journalism challenge must be enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited college in the Philadelphia region (Philly, South Jersey, Delaware).  Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in journalism or communications (i.e. broadcast, radio, print, new media) or in another major working toward a journalism career.

 

COLLEGE STUDENTS Undergrad / Part-Time

$500

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering one (1) $500 scholarship to a Philadelphia area college student enrolled as a part-time student (minimum 6 credits) in a four-year accredited college.  Student must be pursuing a degree in journalism / multimedia arts.

 

COLLEGE STUDENTS Community College / Full-Time

$500

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering one (1) $500 scholarship to a Philadelphia area community college student enrolled full-time in a two year accredited college. Student must be pursuing an associate degree in journalism / multimedia arts.

FUTURE JOURNALIST  9th – 12th grade

$500 for equipment

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering $500 towards the purchase of equipment or software to a Philadelphia area high school student actively exploring their interest in the field of journalism or multimedia arts.

 YOUNG ASPIRING JOURNALIST  4th – 8th grade

$500 for equipment

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists is offering $500 towards the purchase of equipment or software to a Philadelphia area 4th to 8th  grade student actively exploring their interest in the field of journalism or multimedia arts.

 

REQUIREMENTS

College Students

  • Full-time applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 12 credits
  • Part-time applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 6 credits
  • Community College applicants: Must currently have a minimum of 12 credits
  • All applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must provide official sealed transcript from registrar
  • All applicants must submit a minimum of 3 examples of your work.
  • Applicant must have a letter of recommendation from a journalism professor.
  • All applicants must submit a 1200 word essay

 

 High School Students (9th thru 12th grades)

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (official transcript required)
  • All applicants must submit a minimum of 3 examples of your work
  • Applicant must have two letters of recommendation. One letter must be the applicant’s English teacher.
  • All applicants must submit a 1200 word essay

 Elementary / Middle School Students (4th thru 8th grades)

  • All applicants must submit a minimum of 3 examples of your work
  • Applicant must have two letters of recommendation.
  • All applicants must submit a 500 word essay

 

WHAT TO SUBMIT

All College Students

A typed & double spaced 1200 word essay addressing the following:

 

  • As journalists of color, how do we protect the inclusion of African American needs and perspectives in an increasingly diverse news and media landscape?
  • If you had the opportunity to write an article for a national publication, what cause would you cover and why?

 

High School Students (9th thru 12th grade)

 A typed & double spaced 1200 word essay addressing the following:

 

  • What are your journalism aspirations?
  • What or who has been your biggest inspiration?
  • Explain the importance of journalism in today’s society.

 

Elementary / Middle School Students (4th thru 8th grade)

A typed & double spaced 500 word essay addressing the following:

 

  • Why do you want to be a journalist?
  • What or who has been your biggest inspiration?

 

 

TIMELINE

  1. Deadline for all submissions:  October 1, 2019
  2. Winners Announced: October 7, 2019
  3. Awards & Scholarship Gala: Saturday November 2, 2019

 

* Scholarship winners must be present to receive their scholarship award on Saturday Nov 2, 2019 at the Annual Awards & Scholarship Gala
